Musashi-Kosugi: Fast Trains to Tokyo and Yokohama, and What It Costs

Musashi-Kosugi is in Nakahara Ward, Kawasaki, just across the Tama River from Tokyo. This guide asks two questions: how quickly can you reach Tokyo, Shibuya and Yokohama, and what are the trade-offs? It answers them from published sources only: route data, rent statistics and Kawasaki City’s own records of flooding in the 2019 typhoon.

The commute advantage, in numbers

Fastest routes for a weekday departure around 08:00 (Wednesday, October 7, 2026), IC fares, Yahoo! Japan Transit (checked October 3, 2026). Lines are the ones used on the fastest route.

To Time Transfers Line used IC fare 1-month pass
Shinagawa 10 min 0 JR Yokosuka Line ¥209 ¥6,240
Yokohama 12 min 0 JR Yokosuka Line ¥253 ¥7,840
Shibuya 16 min 0 JR Shōnan-Shinjuku Line ¥341 ¥10,480
Tokyo 19 min 0 JR Yokosuka Line ¥341 ¥10,480
Shinjuku 21 min 0 JR Shōnan-Shinjuku Line ¥440 ¥13,120
Ōtemachi 29 min 1 JR Yokosuka Line + Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line ¥519 ¥17,110

What it means: of the three station areas Japanese Best currently covers (Nishi-Kasai, Kichijōji and Musashi-Kosugi), Musashi-Kosugi is the only one with direct trains to Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Yokohama, all within about 20 minutes. That makes it practical for households where one person works in Tokyo and another in Yokohama.

What that convenience costs: rent

Area Average monthly rent (2023)
Nakahara Ward, Kawasaki (Musashi-Kosugi) ¥89,747
Kawasaki City overall ¥79,273
Tokyo 23 wards ¥94,853
Ōta Ward, Tokyo (across the river) ¥84,489
Yokohama City ¥75,381

Source: 2023 Housing and Land Survey, Table 112-3 (average rent actually paid, all rented homes). Nakahara is the highest-rent ward in Kawasaki (the city’s other wards range from ¥73,248 to ¥81,593). It is about 13% above the Kawasaki average and about 5% below the 23-ward average (our calculations).

The 2019 flooding and what has changed

Kawasaki City’s waterworks bureau keeps a dedicated page on flooding in the areas around drainage outlets (排水樋管) in Nakahara, Takatsu and Tama wards during Typhoon No. 19 of 2019 (令和元年東日本台風). According to that page, a bypass pipe for the Sannō drainage-outlet area in Nakahara Ward was completed in August 2023. The city has added further measures, including pump-gate facilities, to its medium-term waterworks plan. The city also publishes an inland-flooding (内水) hazard map for each ward, including Nakahara.

Foreign residents

Nakahara Ward had 8,230 foreign residents at the end of March 2026 (Kawasaki City statistics). The largest groups were China (2,451), South Korea (1,154), Vietnam (686), the Philippines (635), Nepal (495) and the United States (391). Nakahara has the largest number of US nationals of any ward in Kawasaki (391 of 1,538 citywide).

Two hospitals and Todoroki Ryokuchi

  • Nippon Medical School Musashi Kosugi Hospital, 1-383 Kosugi-machi, Nakahara.
  • Kanto Rosai Hospital, 1-1 Kizuki-Sumiyoshi-chō, Nakahara. Its site lists a bus of about 10 minutes from JR Musashi-Kosugi.
  • Todoroki Ryokuchi, 1-1 Todoroki, Nakahara: a large city park with sports facilities, including the stadium used by Kawasaki Frontale (City of Kawasaki).

The trade-off, summarised

  • Two-commute households (Tokyo plus Yokohama), and people who value direct trains to several hubs.
  • Harder to justify if your budget is set by Kawasaki-wide or Yokohama averages: Nakahara rents are clearly higher than both. Ground-floor or basement flats in the drainage-outlet areas need a check of the city’s hazard map and flood measures.

Not covered yet: supermarkets, rush-hour crowding at the station and what high-rise living is like. These need an on-site visit, which we have not made for this guide.
